O seminário que avança agora para a 3ª edição, pretende promover a apresentação de estudos recentes e inovadores sobre a arte figurativa cristã realizada entre os séculos V e XV, em diferentes territórios e no contacto com distintas culturas e religiões. Conta com a participação de especialistas em várias áreas da História da Arte e de diferentes nacionalidades, académicos e também profissionais de outras instituições em que a arte medieval tem grande relevo, em particular os museus. Promover a estreita partilha de conhecimentos entre as universidades e os museus é, aliás, um dos fortes objectivos destes seminários, desde o seu início.
Destinado não apenas a historiadores da arte e alunos, pretende ser também a face visível e compreensível de trabalhos de investigação recentemente desenvolvidos, para um público não especializado mas que demonstra interesse pelo património artístico e pela História.
Pretende-se, ao longo das sessões temáticas, questionar, debater e procurar entender as obras de arte figurativa nos seus contextos espacial, textual, ritual e/ou cultual (liturgias religiosas ou "políticas"), bem como entender o posicionamento da arte portuguesa no contexto artístico da Cristandade de então. Sendo Portugal um dos reinos medievais da Península Ibérica, e tendo mantido, desde a sua formação, múltiplos contactos com outros reinos do Ocidente e do Oriente, a arte portuguesa destes séculos deverá reflectir o intercâmbio de modelos e dos "saber fazer" postos em prática por artistas e comitentes, autóctones e estrangeiros. Por isso, e porque este é um campo de estudo que, em Portugal, tem ainda um amplo espaço de debate e de reflexão, o Seminário pretende dar um forte e inovador contributo.

This meeting aims to promote the presentation of the latest and innovative studies on figurative art produced from the 5th to the 15th centuries, in different territories and in contact with several cultures and religions. A whole team of experts from different fields and nationalities will participate, those including academics and professionals from other institutions where medieval art plays a definitive role, particularly museums. One of the stated goals of this initiative is actually to prompt knowledge exchange between universities and museums, two of the main institutions where research on medieval art is produced.
The main scientific aim is to question, debate and try to understand the works of art in their spatial contexts, textual, ritual and/or cult (religious or "political" liturgies), as well as to improve and expand knowledge on the role played by Portuguese art in the broader European and Christian contexts. Portugal - one of the medieval kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula - maintained since its formation in mid-twelve century multiple contacts with other Western and the Eastern Kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula. The Portuguese art of these centuries should reflect the artistic transfers and "know-how" implemented by artists and patrons, both native and foreign. This is a field of study in Portugal, as in other countries, which still has a wide room for debate and reflection.
